Where should an outdoor combustion air intake be located?
The intake should be in a spot where it won't be obstructed by snow. It should not be close to the exhaust from other mechanical devices and should not be close to gas regulators, clothes dryer exhausts, etc.
Improperly located combustion air intakes may not draw any air or may draw air that is not clean. The fireplace may be starved for air if it cannot draw from the air intake. There is a risk of explosion if the intake draws in natural gas from a regulator vent.
Check with local authorities to see where intakes should be located. Typically, they have to be at least 12 inches above ground level. In heavy snow areas, they may have to be higher. They may have to be located away from other mechanical inlets or exhausts or away from inside corners of buildings, for example. Where the location is poor, we recommend rearrangement.
