How can I tell if an outdoor air thermostat is working?
The outdoor-air temperature sensor either turns the burner on to maintain the boiler water temperature within a given range, or it doesn't. In many cases, you won't know how the system is arranged. You may not even notice the outdoor-air temperature sensor. It's typically a small copper bulb attached to a very small copper line coming into the building and connecting to the boiler controls.
The causes for problems are typically electrical or mechanical.
Some systems will still work even if the sensor is inoperative. Comfort may be somewhat reduced. Other systems rely entirely on the sensor. If it doesn't work, there will be no heat.
If you have an outdoor-air temperature sensor, we recommend that a service person check it during regular servicing.
