In many jurisdictions, a 2 inch combustible clearance is required for the first 3 feet away from the firebox. In other areas, clearances may have to be greater, up to 9 inches in some cases.

Inadequate clearance means a risk of fire in the home, especially if there is reverse flow and smoke from the fire moves though the duct.

Check what clearances are required in your area if outdoor combustion air intakes are used. Try to get a look at where the combustion air intakes are run. They may be visible from a basement or other subgrade area. In many cases you won't have access.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
