What are the implications of a disconnected outdoor combustion air duct?
The duct should be continuous, of course.
The system may never have been connected properly, or it may be disconnected as a result of mechanical damage or poor initial connections.
If the duct is disconnected, the outdoor combustion air intake system will not work. Considerable air leakage into another part of the house may result. This may cause high heating bills, for example. The fireplace may not draw properly.
Where you can see the duct, make sure that it is continuous and intact. When you open the hood or damper at the firebox, look in with a flashlight to make sure there is a duct present. If you can look into the intake on the exterior, do so to make sure there is a duct connected.
