Why shouldn't there be supply registers in the garage?
Forced-air heating systems should not have supply registers or return grilles in garages. Automobile exhaust being drawn into the house is a very real threat.
Some people say you don't have to worry about it in supply registers because the furnace fan will push air into the garage rather than allow air to flow back into the house. This may be true when the furnace is operating, but when the fan is at rest, airflow may very well be from the garage into the house. This is not a safe arrangement!
The implication is a life safety issue with products of combustion from automobiles entering the house.
Where you see ducts running through garages, make sure there are no openings. If there are, we recommend that they be closed and sealed.
