What may have caused my belt to break on my garage door opener?

It is Chamberlain Lift master Professional 3/4HP screw drive model 2110 manufactured 3/04 and the garage door would not open or close. While investigating the cause I found a broken belt and everything looks to be fine otherwise. I was wondering if I should just change the belt or did something else cause this to break?

I recommend pulling the Emergency Release Handle, and manually lower and raise the door to confirm that the door is not binding. Check the travel limits and the screw drive. I recommend replacing the belt at this time and check the operation. The belt may have just broke due to age.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
