How can I fix my garage door opener if it just grinds but the door does not open?

1/2 Horse power Craftman door opener, Model # 139.53662SRT2. The door will not open when the remote device is pushed. What happens is the motor grinds for a second or two, and the light flashes a couple of times. How can I fix this?

I am assuming the door does not open from either the remotes or the wall control so the issue is either with the opener motor or something in the lift mechanisms.

You can confirm if the problem is with the door or the opener by disconnecting your door with the release rope and seeing if the lift mechanism will then move. If the lift trolley is still not moving there may be a failure in the opener itself but it could still be related to your door or lift springs so take the time to test how hard it is to move your door and if it will stay half open on its own.

Motor failures are pretty rare but issues with the door springs and balance are common and could bind the door or overload the opener until the worm and drive gears strip. In that case you are probably hearing the gears jumping and grinding. If you check the parts diagrams in your manual or online at the Sears Parts site you will see the gears labeled as reference key number 3. There is more information in the links below that may helpful.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
