What could cause my garage door opener to not go down unless I hold the button on the wall in?
My garage door would not come down with the remote control. From inside the garage I have to press the button hard and hold it, then the door will come down. If I release the pressure before the door is completely down, the door will go up.

I am assuming that your garage door opener is a Craftsman. If this is true the problem is in your door safety sensors. Look at the sensors and see if there is a small LED on each one glowing. If the LED is blinking, they are out of alignment. If either one is not glowing, it is probably bad. There is a possibility that the wire to the sensor is broken or shorted, but usually the sensor has just failed.

You did well by holding the button on the wall switch. This eliminated several possibilities for the door not closing. When you can override it by holding in the button on the wall switch, it can only be a problem with the door safety sensors.
