I have a 9yr old keyless entry (139.53684) for my garage door. It works sometimes (has new battery). Does the number pad go bad (e.g. bad contacts) and that is probably the problem?
Typically the keypads are fairly reliable. Since they are intended for use outside in the weather there are few contact points and failures are pretty rare. Having said that, keypads can go bad just like any other product can.
But before you purchase a new keyless entry there are couple things to consider. First, double-check that your batteries and the battery connections are good. Next time your keypad acts up, try swapping to another set of batteries and see if there is an immediate improvement.
It could also be that you have a problem with some form of intermittent interference. Possibly, something between your keypad and the opener is blocking the signal or it could be something in the area is working in the same frequency range and knocking the signal down. Next time you have a problem with the keypad you might want to check if your remotes are also having an issue when used from the keyless area at that same time. If so, you likely have an interference issue.
The links below have more information on keyless entries and interference that might also help confirm the problem.
