Why won't the lower limit of my garage door opener adjust properly?

I am installing a Craftsman 1/2 HP Garage door opener. Model 139.53920D I am having trouble with getting the opener to close the door and stay closed. I have been adjusting the up and down travel limits but can not get the opener to close the door and stay closed. It seems as if the slightest adjustment of a negative turn on the downward travel makes it so the door won't even close half way.... but turn it the other way less than a 1/128 of a turn and the door closes all the way and bounces back open. Please help.

It sounds like there may be a problem with the actual travel limit assembly itself or possible some binding or drag creating issues. Your opener uses a mechanical limit switch so the information in the links below will apply in your situation and the checks noted there should help locate your problem.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
