Why will the remotes only open the garage door when the wall switch will open and close the door?

We have a Craftsman garage door opener. You can manually raise and lower it with the wall button. The remote only lets us raise the door, but not lower it. The light just blinks. I believe (if they took down the right number) it is model 1021499A. Thanks for your help.

It sounds like a problem with the Safety Sensors. You can manually over ride the Safety Sensors and close the door with the wall switch by holding down the button until it closes all the way. The remotes will not do this to prevent accidentally closing the door on something when you might be out of sight of it.

The Safety Sensors are an important safety feature as any opener can close with enough force to badly damage anything that might be in the way so when they prevent door closing it does flash the lights to advise of a problem.

The number you provided looks like the serial number, the model should start with a “139” if it is a Craftsman opener, but for most models the links below should help with troubleshooting and resolving issues related to safety sensors. Your Owner's Manual will also have similar information.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
