Is my new remote compatible with my garage door opener?

I wanted to buy a keyfob remote control for my Craftsman 139.53990 garage door opener. Searching the Sears Parts website turned up a Remote control (139.53680), which I bought. The opener refuses to Learn this new remote (other wireless openers I already have Learn fine). Can someone tell me if this remote/opener actually work together (model numbers above), or should I return the remote. Thanks.

That should be the correct keyfob/compact remote for a 139.53990SRT opener. It would not work with the newer-style 139.53990D opener however. The "D" models still use an "SRT" (or "Smart") button for programming but use a 315 mhz signal instead of the 390 mhz used by the older models. The different frequency range makes it impossible to program one style remote to the other style opener.

Check the color of the buttons and the part numbers on your working remotes with those on the new one. Even if you had the non-compact/visor clip 53681 remotes, the buttons should still be the same color as on the new 53680 remote. If your old remotes are different then it is likely you have a 315 mhz "D" model. If you check the model number on the overhead opener it should say "D" after it and often the newer-style "D" openers will even say "315" on the side and on the owners manual.

If you do have a 139.53990D opener then you would need the 53752 keyfob/compact remote or 53753 full size/visor clip remote to work with it.

If the remote appears correct and still will not program then the memory on your opener may be full. You would need to erase the memory and reprogram all the remotes. Your owners manual and the links below have more information on how to do that.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
