What does 5 blinks of the LED on my garage door opener mean?

I have a Sears garage door opener model #139.53635srt1. It has power going to the opener. When either a remote or the wall switch is activated it wont open or close. The LED on the back seems to be blinking an error code of 5 short blinks followed by a pause, then the code repeats.

The error code of 5 blinks indicates one of several possibilities. The primary possibility is a failed R. P. M. sensor. Secondary is the overload in the motor is open. Third the run capacitor on the motor is open. Last the windings of the motor are open. These are things a technician will have the proper meters to test. You should schedule service to get the garage door opener repaired.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
