How do you program a hard-wired style keyless entry?

This is a hard-wired model keypad, with no "enter" button; the opener manual for the existing opener 139.53970SRT shows a wireless keypad with an "enter" button, but this keypad may have been retained from an earlier opener. It has a "Learn/Operate" switch inside the indoor unit that connects to the outside keypad; I simply don't remember how to program it, and the old opener instructions are long gone, as is the model number!

This hard-wired keyless entry, with an outside keypad and a keyless control console inside the garage, was a universal type for older openers. Since it was not intended for any specific opener model the instructions came with the keyless assembly itself, which is why the information in your opener manual does not match.

The basic instructions are as follows:

  1. Unplug the overhead garage door opener and the transformer from the keyless console inside the garage
  2. Move the "Learn/Operate" switch under the keyless console cover to the "Learn" position
  3. The outside keypad light will flash*
  4. Enter your 4-digit code on the keyboard
  5. Move the "Learn/Operate" switch to the "Operate" position
  6. Plug the opener and transformer back in.

The keyless should be programmed. Just enter the 4 digit code and the door will open.

* If the light does not flash on the keypad, check the 9 volt battery next to the switch on the keyless console and the wire connections. The battery typically lasts for about 1 year but if the battery is low the keypad light will not flash and the code will not program.

Unfortunately, the instruction sheet for this older universal-style keyless entry is not currently online at Manage My Home but you can order a printed copy through your Sears Store or Sears.com using the part number 09.139.114A1136.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
