I have a Sears garage door opener model 139.53991. Our home experienced a nearby lightning strike to a tree. Subsequently this door opener has stopped functioning correctly, it may or may not be related. I noticed one of the sensing eyes LED's was not lit. I have another opener just like this one and it functions correctly. I removed one of the sensors from that door and installed it on the non-working door. It still would not go down (starts to and reverses immediately). I put the defective door sensor on the good door and it would not go down. Apparently I have a something defective in my safety sensor circuitry. Do you have a recommendation? Can I jumper out this circuit completely?
You can override the safety sensor circuit by holding the button in on your wall switch. If the door goes down, you know the problem is in the sensor circuit. If the door does go down when you hold the wall switch button, I would swap sensors with the other opener again. Be sure you have the sensor beam lined up properly. You should have a constant light on the LED, not blinking when the beam is lined up properly.
If you have a problem in the safety sensor circuit, when you press the button on the remote the LED on the back of the opener motor unit should blink 10 times. This is a built in diagnostic system in the opener,
If the opener will go down when you hold the wall switch button, but won't work with the different sensor and you still have no LED on the substitute sensor, you probably have damage to the logic board in the motor unit of the opener.
It might be good to have a technician check it out.
This type of damage is usually covered by home owners insurance. It would be good to check with the insurance company.
