My garage door is wood , are there any openers designed to work with it ?
Most openers, and all current Craftsman openers, will work with any residential type garage door whether they are made from wood or fiberglass or metal.
They can work on such a wide variety of doors because they use spring pressure to support a large portion of the door weight. In fact, the way to test that the door weight has been balanced properly is to disconnect the opener and then lift the door halfway up by hand. When properly balanced even a wooden door should stay halfway up if released, but watch your toes just in case.
The only time a wooden door may be an issue is if it absorbs too much moisture. That could increase the door weight until it throws off the balance and requires resetting the spring pressure. It can cause warping or binding as well, which usually does more to weaken the performance of an opener than the actual door weight itself. Most wooden door are weather treated to help prevent this.
Typically a residential door is considered to be up to 18 feet wide and 10 feet tall. Anything larger might require a commercial opener.
