Tell me why my garage doors stop operating when I take my finger off the opener?

When I press the garage door opener the door begins to open (or close) but stops when I take my finger off the opener. We have 2 Sears 1/2 HP closers (part # HBW1127) and they both have the same problem but not always on the same day. I sprayed all moving parts with WD 40 - raised the up power - disconnected the door to check for balance or obstacles and all was OK.

You did a good job checking for friction and lubricating the door.

This problem is most likely caused by misaligned door sensors -- the photo-eye that shoots a beam of light across the bottom of the door to make sure there is no obstruction. The next time a door doesn't work look at the photo-eye, if the LED on one is blinking or out realign the sensors until LEDs are both on and steady.

If you can't make the light come on by aligning the sensors, move the wires to sensors around and see if that makes the LEDs come on.

If the LEDs are both on and steady you have a bad sensor or logic board.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
