How do we protect sandblasted brick?

The brick on our house appears to have been sandblasted in the past. The hard finish is gone and the brick feels very dry.It looks as if the house was painted at one time. The area of the porch was not done and looks fine. Should we paint or stain to protect the brick from further deterioration. We are replacing the plaster with drywall on the inside. Will the insulation get wet if the exterior is left unattended?

Painting the brick is an option, but you must use a breathable paint. You do not want to trap moisture below the paint. When you add insulation anddrywall, the brick will get colder in the winter because it will receive less heat from the indoors. Any moisture trapped within the brick will freeze and cause even more damage. In its present state, it would likely not wet the insulation. Walls that wet easily also dry easily. This is not to say that the wall won't continue to deteriorate. For more information see the link below.
