You should look along beams for evidence of sagging. Sight along the beam using other horizontal reference points. Care should be taken not to line up porch roof beams with gutters. Gutters should never be straight across the face of a structure since they have to slope to work. Beams should not line up with gutters. Sagging suggests nonperformance of the beam and may signal expensive repair work or impending sudden structural failure. In most cases, sagging beams can be identified and repaired or replaced before things collapse.

Beams may sag because

  • they are undersized or overspanned
  • loading is greater than was designed for
  • rot, mechanical damage, holes or notching has weakened the beam
  • a column, often near a midpoint, has been removed

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
