How do I remove or seal oil spills on my garage floor?

How do I remove or seal the oil spills on the garage floor so that I can paint the garage floor or seal it with an epoxy coating. There is an area of about two square feet that has oil drips on it from over the years. Any recommendations on paint or sealer?

The simplest way to remove oil stains is to sprinkle dry wood ash or kitty litter over them. Leave the ash or kitty litter in place for 24 hours or more, then sweep it clean. It will soak up much of the oil. If your stain is too tough for wood ash, or kitty litter try paint thinner (mineral spirits). Pour a little onto the stain, and sprinkle some kitty litter or cornmeal over it before it dries. Allow the paint thinner to dry for about an hour, then sweep it up. You can also try applying a paste of detergent and water. Wait several hours, then scrub with a wet, stiff brush. There a number of brand name paintsand epoxy finishes for garage floors on the market today. We do not recommend specific products.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
