My three-year-old garage door opener has worked fine until recently. Now, two or three times a week, when the door has been opened, it will not respond to the close command either from the touchpad or the remote. I have to wait for 15 minutes or more before it will close. Can you suggest what the problem might be and what is involved in fixing it?
There are several possibilities for what is causing the problem. The auto-reverse sensitivity may need adjustment, or the door may be binding enough to cause the auto-reverse to stop the door from coming down. A binding or badly balanced door may be enough to overheat the motor, which may have a timed thermal cutout. There may be an electronic problem inside the opener, which would require the replacement of parts. First, try testing and adjusting the auto-reverse mechanism. Next, disconnect the door and make sure that it is balanced. The link below should help you with this. Although a pretty basic step, I'd also suggest changing the batteries in the remote and the touchpad, just to be sure that failing batteries aren't the problem. If the door needs to be balanced, or if the checks above didn't reveal the problem, you'll need to contact a garage door specialist.
