How do I silence my garage door opener?

I have a raised ranch with a room over the 3 car garage. My bedroom is over the garage and when one of the 2 doorsis opened it is enough to wake the dead. Is there any way of silencing them somehow? (The garage door openers are Craftsman.)

In all likelihood your garage door openers are chain driven. Belt driven garage door openers are significantly quieter. Nonetheless, noise can be significantly reduced by having a perfectly balanced garage door, well lubricated hinges and wheels, and a well secured mechanism. See the links below. Because you have a room above the garage, the ceiling is undoubtedly insulated and finished. It may be possible to add strapping below the finish ceiling to tie several joists together in the vicinity of the garage door openers. This prevents the openers from moving the one or two joists that they might be connected to.
