I'm installing hardwood flooring in the master bedroom above the 3 car garage. I want to help eliminate the noise I hear from the garage doors. Will felt paper or something else help alleviate the noise if I put it down first. Currently the room is carpeted and the garage ceiling is insulated and drywalled. My garage door openers are chain driven, and noisy.
Felt paper will help a little, but not much. The carpet in the room now probably does more for noise abatement than hardwood over felt paper. The garage door openers are fastened to metal brackets which are ultimately fastened to the bottom of your bedroom floor joists. Therefore the sound is transmitted directly into the bedroom. The bedroom floor acts like the skin of a drum and can amplify the sound. The trick is to have well installed, smoothly operating, perfectly balanced garage doors that require very little effort to open and close. Once your doors are the way you want them, consider screw driven, or better yet, belt driven garage door openers. They are significantly quieter, although not quite as durable as chain driven units. Garage door openers with DC motors also tend to be quieter.
