Any advice on buying a garage door opener?
I need to purchase a new garage door opener. Which is better, a chain drive or a belt drive? What horsepower should I be considering? Sears has two openers on sale this week and I would like to purchase one. Any advice you could give me would be most appreciated.

There are three basic types of garage door openers: chain drive, screw drive, and belt drive. Chain drive units tend to be the most robust, but are noisier. Belt drive units are the quietest, but perhaps not as rugged. Any modern garage door opener, regardless of drive system will be significantly quieter than anything that you are replacing. Garage door openerscome in 1/3rd horsepower, 1/2 hp and 3/4 hp. A properly balanced double car garage door will operate just fine with a 1/2 horsepower motor. Most garage door openers fail because of problems with the door, which in turn puts excessive stress on the opener. It is imperative that the door opens and closes easily. The door must also be counterbalanced, so that it remains half open, if you lift it half way and let go. If you have any concerns about your door, I would suggest contemplating a professional installation.
