Will my refrigerator operate in a cold garage?

The customer has model number 57372 side-x-side refrigerator in a garage. It is getting cold in garage, down to about 40 degrees. Service was out and told him this unit was not designed to work in garage with low ambient temperatures. They like model number 76592 with a bottom freezer. It has digital, dual electronic controls for freezer and refrigerator sections. Will it work in garage properly?

I reviewed the installation guide on both models you listed. In both cases, the manufacture recommends the unit be located where the temperature will not fall below 55 degrees.

There is a garage kit available for the Kenmore 253 source and Frigidaire top freezer models that will allow the unit to operate in low ambient temperatures of 34 degrees and above. The garage kit is a foil type heater that basically tricks the refrigerator thermostat into thinking the fresh food section needs to be cooled down and brings on the compressor. The other problem is in low temperatures the oil in the compressor will gel and not lubricate the compressor properly leading to premature failure.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
