Can you use an outdoor receptacle to supply underground wiring to a shed?

You can use an outdoor receptacle as an electrical supply for underground wiring to a shed if the following criteria are met:

  • the connection is hardwired, and not simply plugged into the outdoor receptacle
  • the wiring is protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter
  • the electrical demand in the shed is low (lighting for example -- but not power tools)and can be fed by number 14 gauge copper wire
