The fan may be inoperative because of an interrupted power supply. If one leg of the 240-volt power supply is disconnected, the fan will not work. (Most fans are 240-volt. Some older fans are 120-volt.) The fan motor may fail and, in some cases, the compressor may be working but the fan may not be. The fan motor may fail as a result of a number of things, including bearing problems and obstructions.

When the outdoor fan doesn't work, very little heat will be transferred to the outdoor air, which means that the air conditioning will not perform properly. Over time, compressor failure may result.

When the unit is running, ensure the fan blades are turning. Most modern fans are axial and turn at approximately 1,800 RPM. Newer quiet low rpm fans may turn at 875 rpm. If the fan is not moving or is moving very slowly, service is required.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
