SKILL LEVEL 2
Your home audio system should envelop you in sound. That doesn't mean making your eardrums hurt – though most systems can, if you'd like. Instead, you should feel like the sound is coming from all around you. The trick is to put all the speakers in the right place.

Put the center speaker directly above or below your television, aimed to ear height at the sweet spot of the seating area. If it's above the television, set it flush with the front edge of the television to prevent sound from bouncing off the cabinet or any other surface.
Place the front speakers 25 to 30 degrees to each side of the television, at least 6 feet apart. Aim the speakers to ear height at the sweet spot. For the best home audio sound quality, put them the same distance from the sweet spot as the center speaker.
Hang the surround speakers on the wall with speaker mounts 2 to 3 feet above ear height, slightly behind and to each side of the sitting area. Each speaker should be the same distance from the seating area. If you can't hang them on the wall, use speaker stands of the appropriate height to get the best home audio sound quality.
Place the subwoofer on the floor beside the television or anywhere out of the way. The amount of bass you get varies with the subwoofer placement, so adjust the location until you get the best sound quality. Place it against a wall to increase the bass or in a corner to maximize it.
Use the speaker set-up menu to get the best possible home audio sound, going through the whole menu. Set the same sound level for all speakers and use a time delay to make the sound from all the speakers reach your ears at the same time.
While watching television, move the speakers a few inches in different directions until you get the best sound quality. To adjust the front and surround speaker locations, move both speakers the same distance.
