  • Step 1 Choose the right self-tanner

There's an art to choosing the right self-tanner. You need to consider tone, texture and brand.

Tone. First, choose the correct tanner for your skin tone (not all self-tanners are created equal). If you burn easily (Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger), use self-tanner for light skin. If you burn then tan (Cameron Diaz, Sarah Jessica Parker), use light to medium. And if you tan easily (Eva Mendes, Salma Hayek), use medium to dark.

Texture. Next, choose the right texture. For the most even results, use creams, foam or gels. Sprays and liquids are more likely to leave streaks or blotches. Some products deposit color immediately to help guide you. Tinted self-tanners make it easier to see where you've applied the self-tanner and give you a bronzed look immediately, while the longer-lasting tan develops.

Brand. Gone are the days when self-tanning left you orange. Some good self-tanner brands to try include Xen-Tan, Mystic Tan, St. Tropez, Lancaster, Fake Bake, ModelCo., Clarins, Bliss, Guerlain and Too Faced.
