Replace a Light Fixture

SKILL LEVEL 3

That out-of-style ceiling light fixture can drag down the look of your whole room. Fortunately, replacing it with a new light fixture can be surprisingly easy.

This project involves working with electricity. If you're uncomfortable with the inherent risk, hire a professional.

It's easiest to replace a light fixture with a base that's the same size as the existing light fixture. Remove the fixture from its packaging and read the installation instructions thoroughly to make sure you understand and are comfortable doing all the steps. If you're installing a ceiling fan, or if the new light fixture weighs more than 50 pounds, install a wood brace that bridges the joists above the ceiling to support the weight.
