Plan an Engagement Party

SKILL LEVEL 2

by Dayna Del Val

A new engagement is exciting, not just for the happy couple, but also for their friends and families. An engagement party — while certainly not a mandatory part of the wedding planning process — is a fun way to be introduced as an engaged couple and it creates an environment for families to meet and connect. While there are some “rules” to plan an engagement party, there is also a tremendous amount of leeway in terms of what kind of party you throw.

Dayna Del Val did not have a formal engagement party, but her friends did throw some lovely, impromptu gatherings to celebrate.

The bride’s family typically hosts this event, but that doesn’t mean that others can’t do the hosting, including the bride and groom. There are some things to consider when putting together the guest list, however, regardless of who throws the party:

    • Only invite people who will also be invited to the wedding
    • Except for immediate family, don’t invite people who would have to fly to a location for the party since they will presumably fly to the wedding within the year as well
    • Immediate families are the only people who absolutely must be invited.
    • Anyone else is at the discretion of the bride and groom
