Set up a Home Theater

SKILL LEVEL 4

With high-definition scenes and audio, your home theater can rival the experience of going to a theater — minus the spilled popcorn under your feet and the chatty couple behind you. Here are the basics for connecting your home theater components. And once everything is set up, we share insights on helping your electronics and family coexist safely, saving energy, and having your system serviced for long life.

  • Step 1 Unpack and plan your home theater

To get started, unpack all the components and read the installation instructions. Check your television's compatibility with your home theater system. To avoid damaging heat-sensitive components, note which ones can't have anything on top of them.

Measure each component and then draw a sketch showing where all pieces go in the entertainment center — that way, you can adjust for fit and plan cable connections on paper instead of when you're moving pieces into place.

Put batteries in the remotes so you can test the components later, and then unpack and unwind the cables and set them near your tools. If any cables are too short for the connections you've laid out, either redo the layout or buy longer cables.

Make sure you have all cables you need. A good information source is the Consumer Electronics Association's connections guide. Here are some possibilities:

    • One or more HDMI cables
    • An antennae if you don't have cable
    • A USB 2.0 device for accessing pictures, video and MP3 files that are on your laptop
    • A surge protector, preferably one that conserves energy when electronics are turned off.
