    Expanding doorways

My brother and I spent my entire Christmas break from school together working on our grandfather's 100+ year old farm house. "Mom and dad," as we called them, raised us with a lot of love and understanding. They rescued us from truly terrible conditions and raised us as their own at a time in their life when they should have been thinking about retirement instead of taking on a couple of toddlers. They attended every program, game and event as if we were their own and taught us right from wrong. Although "mom" has been gone a long time, we've been lucky to have "dad" with us well into his 80's. He has been in failing health and a recent stroke has left him confined to a wheelchair, but we plan to bring him home from the nursing home soon. This house wasn't built with wheel chairs in mind, so we're expanding every doorway on the main floor to be handicap accessible. This project has been a labor of love for the man who showed us so much of his own.

Wow I can so relate to this…being 26 and the main caretaker of my 82 year old great-uncle I know The love of a family and the lengths you would go to for them. My Family comes first in life and it makes me feel good to see so much work and love put into this project for yours.

I love this project because it’s a labor of love!! All the projects are winners in GODS EYES~

Weicht Family; You are ALL amazing for being so dedicated, caring, and true to your family. If only there where more like you. Sam,you are always thinking of someone else. You make us proud. Good luck! The Willards

Giving you my vote today! This is the one and only project here worthy of $10,000! I hate that we have to compete against each other because I would be voting for you daily. My Grandparents mean the world to me, hats off to you for doing this!!! Melissaann11

Sam and Steve – We know how much you love your Grandpa. We are so proud of you that you have taken on this project. You’re definitely getting our vote. You’ve both grown up to be remarkable young men.

I was at many of the events that you speak of. Your Mom and Dad were very special people. I might add that they didn’t just attend. If there was something to do or help with ‘they’ were doing it! I really hope that you win this. What a great way that you can give back.

You mention the time that you two put into this project, but I know there was a lot of cost involved, too. This can’t have been easy for a school teacher and a laid-off lineman to pull off. I know you still have a lot of medical equipment to purchase for your grandfather yet, too. That $10,000 Sears card would allow you to get everything you need from Sears Home Medical supply. I really hope you and Steve win this, Sam.

Sam and brother, what a labor of love. To top it all off I know that Sam works as a soccer coach for high school girls in a program that takes A LOT of time. Yet you have found enough time to do this and coach along with many other positives things too. Good job and the very best to all of you, gig. bigsdog

I voted for this project because, after reading about all of the finalists, this one had the most “heart.”

      Steve does great work!!!

Way to go, Sam. We are happy to see you working so hard for you “Dad”. Hope you can bring him home soon. Dan & Laurie

Love the old plaster and cross boards. Old houses are fun.

I grew up in an older home with plaster walls. Any project you take on is a big one!! Good luck finishing, you have my vote because of the love you are putting into the project and the reason.

You were truely blessed to be raised by “Mom & Dad”. They taught you to be thankful & caring young men who did not forget from where they came from. Therefore, you have my vote. Good luck. May God bless you all.

That is such a sweet story! That is wonderful what you all are doing for ” Dad” You two are Truley Blessed to have them in your Life! I can’t wait to see the Outcome!!

      Really great work!

      really great work

I love this project! Wow, my grandmother lives with me so I know how you have to have lots of handicap accessible rooms. 2 thumbs up for you guys!

This project is definitely a labor of love!! Hope to see the finishing touches on this:)

This is a very heartfelt project. Your grandfather must be a very special man. I owned an older home, so I know the work involved. TONS! I want to see more of this project.

Older houses (and yours must be an older home to have the plaster and lathe walls you can see in the photos) were never ADA amenable. It’s a major project, but somehow I think it was a project of love fo ryou father and I’m sure he’s greatful. It’s a major undertaking to deal with plaster and lathe walls, and I think you guys did a grat job of integrating the newer materials and methods into the older materials and sizes.

That is such a touching story. You guys have taken on a huge project and sacrificed a lot. I know your grandfather will love it, and I hope you’ll post the missing photos when the contest is all done.

I was trying to upload a few more recent photos, but it looks like I ran out of time for the contest. We’ve redone the front porch and built a wheel chair ramp on the front of the house, though it’s covered in snow at the moment. We’ve ripped up the old carpet and we’ve installed some of the new flooring already. We’re in the process of moving furniture now so we can recarpet the other two rooms. We had hoped to have this done before I went back to school, but we knew it was going to be a big job before we started. A few more days of work and a thorough cleaning are ahead of us before we can bring dad home for good.

Nice work! Shoot us some video of your dad when he sees your work!
