You've gotten through your moving day, but you're still surrounded by boxes. You might be tempted to forgo all other aspects of life until you've emptied them out. Resist this temptation and take some time, for at least a couple of hours each day, to stretch out and get comfortable in your new surroundings. To help you get settled in your new home, here are some helpful tips:
- Take a walk through the neighborhood with your family. The moving event has likely been at least a little stressful and this is a good opportunity to relax and bond.
- Give your home a thorough cleaning. While there may still be a lot of clutter, rooms such as the kitchen and bathroom should be relatively open and ready for a good scrub.
- Go to the post office and collect any mail that has been held for you.
- Locate the hospitals and veterinary clinics (if applicable) in your area.
- Meet the principal and teachers at your kids' new schools.
- Locate the nearest shopping centers. In particular, you'll want to know where to get groceries and hardware/house ware items in the first few days at your new residence.
- Call/or search online for your municipal government's sanitation department to find out when garbage and/or recycling is collected — you'll have a lot of both in the first couple of weeks.
- Revise legal documents (i.e. wills) to include your new address.
- Obtain a copy of the local phone book and take down numbers for emergencies and other locally provided services (if you have moved to a new municipality).
Relax, But Pay Attention to Detail

Again, take it easy in the first days and weeks following your move. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't take advantage of this opportunity to truly create the home of your dreams.
As you settle in, start paying attention to any small details you'd like to change or home improvement projects you'd like to attempt. It's easy to forget about these things over time, so it's best to strike while the iron of inspiration is hot.
