Your Move: 1-2 Months to Go Checklist

You'll find that your moving experience is more manageable if the many large tasks are broken down into smaller components. And by tackling certain items early in the process, you will save yourself a great deal of stress as your move-in date approaches.

1-2 months to go

With several weeks to go until your move, you can start planning the big day with the following checklist:

  • Contact your utility companies and plan to have their services connected at your new home on your move date.
  • Call or write your insurance companies and arrange to transfer your coverage where applicable. If you're moving long distance, find out if your insurance covers long-distance moves.
  • Start planning for how you intend to pack the large and/or valuable items in your home.
  • Notify any publications to which you have subscribed that you will be moving. Instruct them to either cancel or transfer your subscription to your new address.
  • Contact the phone company and arrange for them to connect the line at your new residence before you move.
  • Meet with your banks and financial institutions and plan to transfer your accounts to the branch that is closest to your new home.
  • Notify your children's schools of your intention to move.
  • Take inventory of any prescriptions your family needs and plan to have them renewed before your move date.
  • Give a cancellation date to any housecleaning and landscaping services you use.
  • Call Goodwill/Salvation Army and arrange for pickup of any old or unwanted clothes/other items. The sooner you get rid of any household clutter, the easier it will be to organize your move.
  • Separate any documents related to your move and do not pack them. You'll want to have them around for easy reference, all the way through the moving experience.
  • Plan a going-away party for friends and neighbors to let them know you appreciate their support and so they can share in your excitement about moving (some may even offer to help!). Consider inviting the new owners of your home to your going away party. It's a great way for them to meet their new neighbors.

A Tip to Consider

Many phone calls and arrangements need to be made during the moving experience, and it's easy to lose track of what you've done and what you haven't done.

Try to schedule your phone calls and preparations for a time when you can focus exclusively on the tasks at hand and use the checklist to record your progress.
