Maintain Your Home Theater

Home theater

Your home theater is the center of entertainment for you and your family. So make sure you’re getting optimal use of your TV and audio system. While every home theater system is different, they all need the same types of upkeep. Here are a few ways to keep your system in working order.

Time — 10-15 minutes
Difficulty — Easy
Expertise —None
Frequency — Every 6 months
Where — All US

Steps

  1. Clean your home theater component casings by using a soft cloth dampened lightly with a mild cleanser to remove dust from the outside casings of your components. Don’t forget to wipe the remote as well. To remove sticky substances, lightly dampen a tissue with rubbing alcohol and rub the area a few times.
  2. If your component has a vent, make sure it isn’t blocked by another component or clogged with dust. The vent keeps the component from overheating, so it’s very important to keep it clear.
  3. Clean the lenses your CD, LD and DVD player use to read the disk. Regular lens cleaning prevents skipping and long-term damage to your players. To prevent problems, use a special lens cleaning kit. Kits usually include a disc equipped with a small brush that you insert into your system — follow the instructions that come with the kit.
  4. Gently clean your TV screen. Start by unplugging it from the wall or surge protector. If you have a plasma screen, use a cloth dampened with water. If you have an LCD screen, use a soft, dry cloth. Gently wipe the screen and avoid pressing on it.

Tips and Warnings

  • Before you remove your cables and wires, mark them with colored masking tape. Coordinate the same color with the input, so you know how to reconnect them.
  • Check the product manuals for your components for specific cleaning instructions.
