Cats claw things — it's how they tone their muscles between naps. You can save your furniture by providing sisal scratching posts (rub a little dry catnip on them) and by keeping your cat’s claws trimmed.
Some cats don't mind having their claws trimmed, while others find the process completely unamusing. If your cat falls into the latter group, wait until she's well-fed and content (or asleep) before starting her manicure. Use a nail clipper made especially for cats, which tugs less and doesn’t make a loud snip sound. Even with these accommodations, it could take a few sessions to finish trimming her claws.
- Wash your hands and disinfect nail clippers with rubbing alcohol.
- Hold your cat on your lap, or have a helper hold her.
- Gently press one paw between your thumb and forefinger until the cat claws protrude.
- Snip off the end of each cat claw. DON'T snip close to the paw.
- When finished, tell your cat that she's a pretty kitty, and a smart kitty, and a good kitty. Then kiss the top of her furry little head and give her a treat.
- Wash your hands again. You know where those paws have been.
