Goldfish are colorful, inexpensive pets that can live for many years with proper care. They get by with a pinch of food each day and clean water when the water in the bowl becomes dirty. Depending on the size of the fish and of the goldfish bowl, you might need to remove and replace water weekly and give the bowl a good cleaning once a month.
- Fill a bowl with about 2/3 the amount of water in the goldfish bowl. Add dechlorinating drops according to label instructions.
- Set the bowl of water near the goldfish bowl for at least several hours to let the drops work and to allow the water to reach room temperature.
- Without removing the goldfish from the bowl, use a siphon from a pet store or turkey baster to remove 1/2 to 2/3 of the water from the goldfish bowl. Try to suck up any floating fish feces.
- Deposit the dirty water into a bucket. Pour the dirty water into your garden or compost pile.
- Use a damp sponge or paper towel to wipe the inside walls of the goldfish bowl above the lowered water line. Do not use detergent, soap or cleanser.
- Very gently pour the fresh, dechlorinated water into the goldfish bowl, disturbing the fish as little as possible.
- If the water is very dirty, you might have to repeat these steps a few times over a few days; with each exchange of water, the dirty water becomes more diluted with clean water.
