Finding Cool Stuff in Your Neighborhood

You've been in your new home long enough now that you've found the necessities — the shopping malls, grocery stores, hospitals and emergency services. But now you're ready to spread out beyond your home and into your new neighborhood, and become an active member of your community.

Here are some things you can do to meet the people in your area and get involved in community activities.

Have a Picnic in the Park

Pick a good-weather Saturday to bring your family down to the local park for an afternoon of food and play. Invite any neighbors you've already met to take part in the meal and in sports/games. There's a good chance you'll meet even more people who are enjoying a sunny stroll.

Check the Local Paper

Read any community newsletters/papers regularly for information on restaurants and other unique happenings in your neighborhood. Many communities hold special functions like dances or picnics, and the local publications will let you know where to be and when.

Get the Kids Involved

One great way to introduce your kids to their new community is by enrolling them in recreational programs such as sports teams and arts & crafts groups. If your children were involved in a particular organized activity before you moved, finding the equivalent in your new neighborhood will give them a sense of continuity. Plus, you'll be able to meet lots of other parents.

Attend Civic Meetings

They say politics should never be discussed at the dinner table, but being present at town hall-style events gives you a great opportunity to meet people. Many communities have these types of meetings regularly, and your attendance shows your neighbors that you're dedicated to local issues.

Volunteer

Whether it's teaching a children's dance class or helping out at a nearby senior citizens' home, volunteering your time allows you to put some social roots down. Essentially, you get back what you give — and if you give some time to your community, you'll make more friends and find out more about what your neighborhood has to offer.
